The Mountain Run: Take the main road towards Alicante and just near the outskirts of Oliva, bear right, taking the sign to Pego. After Pego, follow the sign for Sagra, Orba and then Parcent. The road passes to the side of Parcent and on your right there is a bar restaurant called Planet, an admirable place to quench your thirst, before your "assault" on the mountains.
From here, it's low gear driving to Coll de Rates where you'll enjoy the most dramatic views. You may return a short distance to the A141 through Pedreguer, and back to the main road, or carry on to the C3313 at Callosa, a left turn and back on the main road, passing through Gata de Gorgo; which we call "Cane City", because of its plethora of cane and basketwork, ranging from the monumentally tasteless straw donkey to some fine furniture. There are good bargains here if you take the time to look around. You may then go straight up the road back to Oliva within 25 minutes.
Lush countryside: The whole countryside around Oliva is lush and fertile with orange and lemon groves - two harvests a year - vegetables, sugar cane and, further north, rice grown in paddy fields. Winters are mild with Oliva receiving only 10 inches of rain per year. Quite close are fields of mulberry bushes, grown for silk production for the mills of Valencia, olives, figs, aubergine, sunflowers, corn and fruits. The summer and autumn nights are warm and it's very pleasant sitting outside the house without the need for sweaters and jackets.
